Meet Rachel Braley, project leader for "Knit for Need!" Rachel learned to knit at a young age and hasn’t stopped since! In 2008, Rachel started her project and has been helping the community by teaching others to knit for charity. Each week, Rachel and her group of knitters make items that are then donated to local homeless shelters, animal shelters, and children’s hospitals. Why did you decide to become a Project Leader? I never intended to be a Project Leader, even after I went to the training. Then I realized that it was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do something really cool.
What has been your most memorable volunteer experience with HandsOn? Since my group meets every week, I have had lots of memorable experiences. The regulars in my knitting group are an utterly amazing group of women. They consistently show a dedication to giving back, are always up for a challenge, including my infamous Ten-Minute Cat Toy, and have the greatest time together. They really make my job as a Project Leader fun.
What is your favorite thing to do to recognize your volunteers? I say thank you. A lot! I think people forget this very basic show of appreciation too often in society now, so I make sure I thank every volunteer that I meet.
Why do you ♥ Volunteering? There is a story about a starfish being thrown into the ocean by someone that wanted to make a difference. I want to make a difference in this world and volunteering is the best way I can think of to do it.
Anything else you would like to tell us about your experience as a Project Leader? I am not as fearless as I seem and I have been especially blessed with the volunteers I have. Their faith in me has given me a personal and professional strength I didn’t know I was capable of. It’s not easy to be a good Project Leader but it is so rewarding.
