Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service took place on Monday, January 17, 2011 this year! MLK Day of Service is a designated national day of service since 1994. It takes place on the third Monday of every January. This day provides the opportunity for the community to honor Dr. King's legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service serves to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridges barriers, and create solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's version of a "Beloved Community".

To honor MLK Day of Service, HandsOn Inland Empire partnered with several nonprofit agencies around the Inland Empire to set up projects and volunteer opportunities for the community to participate in and serve. Approximately 300 volunteers came out to help and serve in a variety of projects. On behalf of everyone at HandsOn Inland Empire and Inland Empire United Way, we would like to express THANK YOU to the volunteers, staff, communities, and community partners that made this day possible. We appreciate all the support and hope to continue to offer these volunteer opportunities. In the meantime, we invite you to visit our website to find more opportunities and get involved!

Family Volunteer Day

Family Volunteer Day was on Saturday, November 20, 2010 this year! This annual of servicehappens on the Saturday before Thanksgiving and is designed to demonstrate the power of families who choose to volunteer together to support the communities in which they live and serve. Volunteering as a family provides quality time for busy families, strengthens communication and bonds and positively impacts local communities across the nation. This event is presented by the HandsOn Network, generated by Points of Light Institute.

In celebration of Family Volunteer Day, HandsOn Inland Empire hosted 3 projects along with Feed the Children, Birthday Bags 4 Kids, and the Family Service Association of Redlands. Over 100 volunteers including those that participated with their family gave their time and effort to a great cause. We want to express a big THANK YOU for all those that took part in this very successful event!

We Made a Difference! Make A Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others -- a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. Everyone can participate. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make A Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of every October.

In celebration of National Make a Difference Day on October 23, 2010 our volunteers in partnership with Kaiser Permanente transformed Mariposa Elementary in Ontario. Volunteers painted murals across campus to add a splash of color for the students of Mariposa Elementary School. We thank all those who came out to support the event and who made a difference in the lives of children!

By using the power and scale of mobile phones, SMS text, and the internet, the Get HandsOn Challenge aims to mobilize Americans to improve their schools, protect their environment, ensure the economic well-being of their friends and neighbors and assist with emergency preparedness and recovery efforts. Specifically, we will mobilize 500,000 service leaders to accomplish 2 million community projects.

The first Get HandsOn Challenge is a game of virtual Service Tag to show your support for making your community better. To play, join our online community and tag others. Then report what you're doing to better your community, find local volunteer opportunities, access our tools and resources, and learn from one another.

Every 500th member who signs-up on the Web site wins $500 for their community. Join us and take the challenge!

Civic Life In America

Civic Life is, in essence, the common thread of participation in and building of one's community. The 2010 Civic Life in America issue brief and website produced through a partnership between the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the National Conference on Citizenship features national statistics, findings, and trends on civic life.

This information provides data on five themes of civic life, including service, political action, participating in a group, connecting to information and current events, and social connectedness.

Examining civic life by information on the civic element of service which is calculated from the CPS Civic Engagement and CPS Volunteer Supplements questions related to volunteering for or through an organization, working with neighbors to fix a community problem, and attending public meetings where community affairs were discussed.

According to this calculation Americans use service to address critical issues in their communities. For example, an average of 62 million Americans volunteer through or for an organization, equating to 26.6 percent of adults (averaging 2007 to 2009 data).Adults who volunteer are more likely to participate other forms of civic engagement than those who do not volunteer.

Taking an even closer look at the Inland Empire, the graph above shows statistics for this area that were collected within the Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Major cities in this MSA include Riverside, CA; San Bernardino, CA; and Ontario, CA.

With summer in full swing, what are you doing to make a difference in your community?

Last summer, President Obama announced a nationwide initiative known as "United We Serve." This initiative was a challenge to the American people, calling on the power of volunteers to help combat against the growing needs in the community as a result of the economic downturn.

This summer, it's First Lady Michelle Obama turn to issue a challenge to the American people. "Let's Read. Let's Move." is another service initiative dedicated to improving the lives of our nation's youth by encouraging academic success, healthy eating and exercise during the summer months. The American people are asked to take action against child obesity and summer reading loss by participating in or starting their own service project.

Wanted: Project Leaders!

Have you ever contacted a nonprofit agency wanting to volunteer, but had a problem getting a hold of the volunteer coordinator? What if you had the power to change the situation?

Even without the present state of the economy, nonprofits have struggled to keep a float using very limited resources, including staff. It is not uncommon to find that the volunteer coordinator is also in charge of HR, Marketing/Communications, or some other program function. Since volunteer coordinators tend to wear multiple hats, it is not a surprise that they don't always get back to prospective and eager volunteers right away. Unfortunately, when volunteer coordinators don't get back to prospective volunteers these volunteers go elsewhere.

This is where YOU come in! By becoming a Project Leader with the Volunteer Initiative of the Inland Empire United Way, HandsOn Inland Empire, you can help others help nonprofits! Project Leaders are trained volunteer leaders who serve as liaison between HandsOn Inland Empire, the nonprofit agency, and potential volunteers. They are responsible for communicating with the volunteers, developing and leading engaging projects, and handling all of the administrative work such as returning a phone call or email.

Sounds like a lot? Not really! HandsOn Inland Empire provides all the tools to help Project Leaders succeed! From the volunteer management software training to supplies and support, HandsOn Inland Empire makes it easy for people to become Project Leaders.

Anyone can become a Project Leader so long as they are:

At least 18 years of age
Attend 2 projects from our online calendar
Willing to commit to leading at least 1 project a month for 6-12 months
Comfortable leading a group of diverse volunteers
Committed to making a difference in their community!

QUICK! There are many agencies and projects waiting for a Project Leader! Could you be the one to "Be the Change?"

Tomorrow will mark the end of the inaugural year of the AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Program (VIP). For the Inland Empire United Way, this means that seven AmeriCorps VIP members will be ending their term of service. They are:

Although we are sad to see them go, we are proud of what they have done for the community. Together they have recruited over 1500 new volunteers, who performed more than 20,000 hours of service and helped their Host Site serve more than 45,000 clients by increasing the capacity for volunteers.

Using your Social Capital for Social Good

What is “social capital?” Social capital is your personal network of resources that can be called upon in times of need. In other words, it’s your friends, family, and co-workers! Many people may not realize it, but social capital is crucial when it comes to volunteering.

Imagine the amount of good you could accomplish if you tapped into your social capital! By volunteering and motivating others to volunteer you are creating a larger, more positive change in your community than you would have been able to do alone!

Not only can you use your social capital to motivate others to volunteer, but you can also increase your own social capital by connecting with people you meet while volunteering at different projects! Increasing your social capital will not only allow you to help more people, but will also help you help yourself when you need things such as a job lead or assistance with a different kind of project.

YouTube Video Volunteers

Do you love making YouTube videos? Do you love to volunteer? Here is a unique opportunity for aspiring film makers to take action and inspire others to volunteer!

Last year, YouTube launched YouTube Video Volunteers to help nonprofits better engage the YouTube community and promote volunteerism. For nonprofits who lack the expertise to create their own YouTube video, this opportunity is too good to pass up! Since its inception, over 500 videos were made for nonprofits working on a wide range of issues from health to human rights, animal welfare to the arts.

This month, YouTube Video Volunteers is looking to celebrate nonprofit organizations that devote themselves to promoting service and volunteerism. The volunteer initiative of the Inland Empire United Way, HandsOn Inland Empire has requested the help of YouTube Video Volunteers to create an an inspiring promotional video to be displayed on YouTube as well as on its website and in presentations to the community.

Knitting Across America Continued...

Hats and scarves galore! These knitted items will soon be donated to those in need!

It's been several weeks now since the Americorps NCCC Blue 7 team left sunny California for hot and humid Louisana. In addition to all of the other volunteer work they are doing some of the members continue to "Knit for Need" during their spare time.

Here is the latest update from Blue 7:

"We've made it to New Orleans safely and are now working with the St. Bernard Project to help rebuild houses destroyed in Hurricane Katrina almost 5 years ago. We've really enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside volunteers and have found that everyone comes with a story and there is always something new to learn each day! We've learned that even after 5 years, much of New Orleans is still in disrepair and we are so happy to be here and help out. We're continuing to try and find time in our busy days to keep up with our knitting also!

Ilyssa has taken up learning how to knit a hat and is doing awesome at it! Michel continues to improve her already excellent knitting skills, experimenting with cool designs and patterns. And I have been busy making baby hats with pretty colors and soft yarn. It seems crazy to be knitting hats when it's so humid and hot out here! But we're sure whoever receives them back in Cali will appreciate them :) I think that's all for now!"

NVW: Rachel Braley

Meet Rachel Braley, project leader for "Knit for Need!" Rachel learned to knit at a young age and hasn’t stopped since! In 2008, Rachel started her project and has been helping the community by teaching others to knit for charity. Each week, Rachel and her group of knitters make items that are then donated to local homeless shelters, animal shelters, and children’s hospitals.

Why did you decide to become a Project Leader? I never intended to be a Project Leader, even after I went to the training. Then I realized that it was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do something really cool.

What has been your most memorable volunteer experience with HandsOn? Since my group meets every week, I have had lots of memorable experiences. The regulars in my knitting group are an utterly amazing group of women. They consistently show a dedication to giving back, are always up for a challenge, including my infamous Ten-Minute Cat Toy, and have the greatest time together. They really make my job as a Project Leader fun.

What is your favorite thing to do to recognize your volunteers? I say thank you. A lot! I think people forget this very basic show of appreciation too often in society now, so I make sure I thank every volunteer that I meet.

Why do you ♥ Volunteering? There is a story about a starfish being thrown into the ocean by someone that wanted to make a difference. I want to make a difference in this world and volunteering is the best way I can think of to do it.

Anything else you would like to tell us about your experience as a Project Leader? I am not as fearless as I seem and I have been especially blessed with the volunteers I have. Their faith in me has given me a personal and professional strength I didn’t know I was capable of. It’s not easy to be a good Project Leader but it is so rewarding.

NVW: Anthony Jacovides

Meet Anthony Jacovides, a youth volunteer for several of HandsOn Inland Empire’s managed projects! Whether it is playing board games with seniors, dancing with people who have disabilities or even knitting, Anthony has touched the lives of many.

When did you first start volunteering with HandsOn Inland Empire? I started volunteering in 2006 as a high school requirement (Damien High School) but started volunteering with HandsOn Inland Empire in 2008/2009.

Why do ♥ volunteering? I feel a satisfaction of making a small difference. Every project I have volunteered for, the organization or project lead person always is so grateful that a person or people have showed up to help that it makes me feel proud to have helped them. I also feel a little embarrassed because it didn't seem like a big effort on my part.

Describe your most memorable volunteer experience with HandsOn Inland Empire. It has to be playing games with senior citizens. They can be very competitive and have great personalities and they also seem to be happy I'm there.

What motivates you to serve? It doesn't take much of my time to volunteer even once a month for a few hours, but it really does make an enormous difference to others. If every high school student had a requirement to volunteer once a year, that would be about 1000 students divided by 365 days = 2-3 students volunteering everyday per high school. That could make a huge difference because certainly a few would continue as I have.

What population/impact area are you most interested in helping and why (ex. Animals, children and youth, seniors, the environment, hunger/homelessness, arts and culture, etc.)? Disabled children and adults and senior citizens because they can not do things like others and it is not by a choice of their own but by circumstances out of their own control. They need the assistance.

Meet the Foothill Communities New Generations Rotary Club, a young group of service-minded individuals dedicated to making a difference! The Foothill Communities New Generations Rotary Club has been volunteering at HandsOn Inland Empire's "Family Fun Night and Potluck" since the Summer of 2009. Read about what one of their members had to say about volunteering with the volunteer initiative of the Inland Empire United Way (IEUW):

"We have committed to the supporting the IEUW's monthly dinner in any way that we can. We have even held fund raisers to fund our support of the project.

Our Rotary Club is made up of young professionals who love to help the community. We try to find service projects that help a diverse range of people and the IEUW helps us do that. The interactive calendar of events has led us to several projects. As a group, we only support the monthly pot luck at the Ronald McDonald House, but our members have volunteered individually for several other projects.

The volunteer initiative of the Inland Empire United Way, HandsOn Inland Empire, has been instrumental in keeping our club active and fun!!"

National Volunteer Week: Cellanae Espanol

In honor of National Volunteer Week, HandsOn Inland Empire is celebrating its volunteers by letting the world know about how great they are! Check back daily to read about different volunteers!
Meet Cellanae Espanol, Project Leader for “Dancing with the Stars”! Since September 2009, Cellanae has been the Project Leader for “Dancing with the Stars” with Pomona Valley Workshop. She has been doing a SPECTACULAR job leading her volunteers and enriching the lives of those they serve.

Why did you decide to become a Project Leader? I was really interested in becoming more involved with volunteer service like the ones Hands On conveniently provides on a regular basis. I really had not intended to become a Project Leader, however, after attending the training and realizing the great need for people to lead volunteer projects, I decided to dedicate my free to time to give back to the community.

What has been your most memorable volunteer experience with HandsOn? My first time leading my volunteer project, “Dancing with the Stars” I remember being a little apprehensive because I really did not know what to expect. Fortunately, I was accompanied by a few friends and family members who signed up for the volunteer project to provide me with support. It turned out really well. Not only did I enjoy helping and interacting with the clients for “Dancing with the Stars”, but my sisters and I were able to bond in a way that we never had before. Since then, we have become a lot closer and enjoy volunteering at other projects together.

What is your favorite volunteer quote and why? “I thought that by volunteering I could give back and make a difference in someone’s life. But volunteering has given more back to me and has truly made a huge difference in my life.”
This is my quote and I love this quote because it is so true. The people I help out and the volunteers that work with me are grateful for the time and help that I have given and the difference that I have made, but in the end I am more grateful for them for touching my life.

What motivates you to serve? My biggest motivation to serve is seeing the people that I serve for Dancing with the Stars. Just seeing them enjoy themselves and have so much energy to dance, laugh and enjoy each other despite their limitations just lightens my heart and allows me to take a step back and reflect on my own life and gives me the motivation to press on through all the hardships.

Americorps NCCC members knit while on their 8 day trip to New Orleans

Ever wonder how many items you could knit while on a road trip to New Orleans? Well, several members from the Americorps NCCC Blue 7 team are going to find out!

During the month of March, the volunteer initiative of the Inland Empire United Way, HandsOn Inland Empire, had the pleasure of having Americorps NCCC members volunteer to do a variety of projects at the Inland Empire United Way. On their last day here, the members did a mini “Knit for Need” project. When the project was over they asked if they could take the project on the road with them and of course we said “YES!”

Read an excerpt from their latest email:
“It's Jen from blue seven, and as I’m sure you've heard from Erwin, we're on our way to New Orleans! We’re currently in Amarillo, Texas, having driven three whole days already! Michel and I, along with Ilyssa and Emma, have been knitting along the way!

Well, I should get to bed. We start our driving early! Thank you again so much for all the opportunities you gave us to volunteer at the United Way! We really, really enjoyed working there and told the next team about it so hopefully they'll be contacting you!”

AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) is a full-time, team-based residential program for men and women ages 18-24. NCCC members are organized into teams of 10-12 members and serve in the region's local communities by responding to community needs in the areas of: disaster preparation, response and recovery; environmental conservation; public safety; urban and rural development; and education.

Cesar Chavez Day of Service

“Si se puede” (it can be done) is the motto by which Cesar Chavez lived his life. To Cesar Chavez, nothing was impossible in his quest to create a better society. Through non-violent practices, Cesar Chavez was able to successfully raise awareness about the injustices incurred by migrant farm workers. His motto along with his ten core values has motivated and inspired others to seek equality for all people.

On Saturday, March 27, 2010, HandsOn Inland Empire will host eight projects throughout the Inland Empire that will use Cesar Chavez's core values to engage the community in a day of service.

HandsOn Inland Empire ♥'s its volunteers! Tonight, we will be celebrating and recognizing the hard work our volunteers have put in the year 2009. Volunteers are the ♥ of our organization and we could not do what we do without them!

At the event, volunteers will be able to meet other volunteers from HandsOn projects, take fun photos at our "volunteer project" photo booth, record their favorite volunteer memories, tweet and update their Facebook statuses about their volunteer experience, and even give back to the community at the same time!

•Bake some goods: Does your sweetie have a sweet tooth? Bake them their favorite dessert! Bake extra so that you can give them to a friend, neighbor, or local law enforcement.
•Make a Card: Do Hallmark cards fail to express the way you feel? Make your own card! Make extra and donate them to children at local hospitals such as the Loma Linda Children’s Hospital and Pomona Valley Hospital (Note: HandsOn Inland Empire has a monthly project called “Sending Smiles with Cards” where you can make cards for children).
•Get Crafty: Do you know how to knit, crochet, or sew? Make a scarf, hat, blanket, or stuffed animal! An extra item can be donated to a shelter, hospital or overseas (Note: HandsOn Inland Empire has a weekly project called, “Knit for Need” where you learn to knit for charity).
Remember to spread the love this Valentine’s Day by letting all your loved ones know that you care for them so much that they inspired you to help others. It will be a gift they will never forget!

"Ordinary" HandsOn Volunteer Heroes helping to revitalize a local school

Most heroes go unrecognized; not because they wear a mask, but because on the surface they appear rather ordinary. However, even though they may not have superhuman abilities like Superman or Wonder Woman, they still make a conscious effort to help others in need and this is what makes them heroes. These “ordinary” heroes have helped families survive tough times, inspired children to learn, brought smiles to otherwise secluded seniors faces, and cleaned up the environment. Who exactly are these ordinary heroes you ask? VOLUNTEERS!

Here at HandsOn Inland Empire, our volunteers are our heroes. This past year alone, HandsOn Inland Empire’s volunteers have contributed over $140,088.85 worth of service back into their communities. It is truly AMAZING the impact HandsOn Inland Empire Volunteers have had on their communities.

Did you know? Many corporations give back to the community. Some give financially, some give in terms of volunteers, and some give both. In the past, HandsOn Inland Empire has had the pleasure of receiving support from many corporations including groups such as Target and UPS.

Just this past October, several UPS groups came to HandsOn Inland Empire’s office to make cards for children, create healthy cookbooks for families at a local homeless shelter, as well as inventory socks that were later distributed to the homeless. Without their help and support, HandsOn Inland Empire would not have been able make an impact on so many others’ lives!

Kindness Makes the World Go ‘Round

Tomorrow is World Kindness Day! What are you going to do to celebrate?

An easy way to show people you care is to perform a random act of kindness. Telling someone to have a nice day or holding the door open for someone are examples of little ways to brighten the day of another individual. The act of kindness can be as simple or complex as you want it to be; the only requirement is that the inspiration comes from your heart.

iParticipate, do you?

Did you watch TV last week? If you did, you may have noticed that your favorite shows highlighted service in one way or another.

As part of their multi-year campaign known as iParticipate, the Entertainment Industry Foundation dedicated last week to celebrate and inspire people around the nation to volunteer. Over 100 different television shows on the major networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC) emphasized service and volunteerism.

Assisting off the Court

First of all, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Denise School and I am the newest Americorps VISTA member here at HandsOn Inland Empire. I’ve lived in the IE for many years and am excited that I have been given this opportunity to serve in my community.

I must say that it really makes my heart smile when I turn on the TV or log-on to the internet and stumble upon a story about a celebrity or another well-known corporation giving back to the community. In particular, the NBA Cares commercials hold a special place in my heart.

As a known Los Angeles Lakers fanatic, I love being able to watch the games and see that the team is giving back to the children in the area. Not only does the team itself commit to improving the community through the Lakers Youth Foundation, but individually, the players do as well. What is even more amazing is that the players also motivate others to volunteer.

Just last month, Ron Artest, the latest addition to the Lakers, tweeted a challenge to his fans to volunteer at certain animal shelters in Los Angeles. The person with the most verified hours at the end of the week received two tickets to a celebrity exclusive event. Currently, my favorite Laker, Sasha Vujacic, is holding a contest that challenges kids to perform acts of kindness in exchange for tickets to the season opener against the Clippers. These are just two excellent examples of how NBA players are inspiring others to make meaningful differences in their community.

These players are role models who lead by example and inspire others to do the same. So take a tip from the NBA and see how you can inspire others to make a difference!

Some people may not realize how easy it is to give back your community. Did you know... there are simple things that you can do year-round that can make a BIG difference.

Here are some ways you can help:
1. Gather your gently used clothing and items and donate them to a homeless shelter.

The HandsOn Inland Empire staff packed up for a week long adventure in San Francisco for the National Conference on Volunteering and Service! The 2009 National Conference on Volunteering and Service took place June 22nd through June 24th and was the world's largest gathering of volunteer leaders from the nonprofit, government and corporate sectors. It was an opportunity to learn, connect and be inspired by the many workshops, speakers, stories, and special events that were offered throughout the week.

The conference offered many events with inspirational guests that we did not want to miss out on! It kicked off with a service project at a local Elementary school organized by CalVolunteers and KaBoom. Over 300 volunteers participated in a playground build with special guests Maria Shriver and First Lady Michelle Obama!

Following the playground build was a dynamic Opening Ceremony that featured many guest speakers, such as First lady Michelle Obama and Gov. Schwarzenegger, as well as special performances by various artists, including Jon Bon Jovi!

The rest of the week was full with opportunities to attend informative workshops and forums, each so inspiring and inspirational.

This conference was put on by the Corporation for National and Community Service and Points of Light Institute. Next year the conference will be held in New York City…hope to see you there!!

AmeriCorps Positions Available!!

Are you interested in making a deeper commitment to service?

HandsOn Inland Empire and California Volunteers have several AmeriCorps positions available. AmeriCorps is a 1 year commitment to community service that will allow you to make a difference. Those qualified for the position will receive a small monthly stipend, as well as a government financial award upon completion.

The two positions:

AmeriCorps VIP
AmeriCorps VIP (Volunteer Infrastructure Project) members will increase the number of volunteers providing needed services to children, youth and families struggling economically in the community. Additionally, AmeriCorps members will build capacity within the volunteer program of the organization to provide high quality support to volunteers in order to provide them the skills and resources they need to be successful and sustain their volunteer activities.

AmeriCorps VISTA
The Capacity Building VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) identifies and connects skilled volunteers, resources and trainings to non-profit organizations. Additionally, the VISTA will create partnerships with community organizations to develop high impact, innovative service opportunities, develop and implement trainings that will allow agency partners to learn and share best practices, and outreach to community stakeholders to create partnerships that will assist low income families become financially stable.

TeenConnect!!

Hello!! My name is Rhea and I am the project leader for HandsOn Inland Empire’s TeenConnect. TeenConnect is an opportunity for high school students to volunteer at 4 different non-profit agencies once a month for 4 months. All four projects will focus on healthy lifestyles. The goal for the 4 projects is to empower youth to make positive decisions in their lives with respect to nutrition and fitness.

The 1st project was at Mercy House – a transitional home for homeless families. A group of volunteers led the children in making healthy snacks. The snacks were fun to make (and yummy!) We made ants on a log, graham cracker stop lights (graham cracker with strawberries, oranges, and grapes), and a berry smoothie.

The 2nd project was at the Boys and Girls Club of Fontana. Volunteers worked with the youth of the club in making a vegetable and herb garden. They planted tomatoes, strawberries, cucumbers, and many types of herbs. The garden looked so good…and just in time for spring!!

Saturday was the 3rd project. Volunteers woke up super earlier on Saturday to come out to Franklin Elementary in Redlands and gave the school a “facelift." Volunteers got their hands dirty and planted 2 beautiful gardens, picked up trash, cleaned up the playground, and decorated stepping stones. The volunteers worked very hard and it sure showed!!
